"Bohemia(n)" in Little Prague Bohemian Restaurant refers to Czech Republic's largest geographic region. It also references the language, culture, and (most importantly) cuisine thereof. Yet we continue to be amazed when people only associate the term Bohemian with nonconformists. They ask, "So like, what is beatnik food?" Sigh. After a lot of thought [and we make no authoritative claims]; it's pretty clear the term "Bohemian" has connections with the Roma (a.k.a. Gypsy) who live in Slavic lands, with Puccini's (non-Czech) Opera "La Boheme" (set in France), with the Czech "Father of Art Nouveau" Alfons Mucha (born in Moravia) whose Paris years overlapped with the "Lost Generation" of Gertrude Stein/Picasso/et. al., and with the Greenwich Village freethinkers who likened themselves to Paris's Left Bank Bohemians. The power of such associations suggests the misinterpretation. The point being, not all Czechs are from Bohemia and not all Bohemians are far out. So be it. Our restaurant is classically "old school," if anything. Since we can't beat 'em, we might as well adjoin 'em. Thus, we offer our facetious Bohemian profile test. It's not scientific. It's not psychologic. It's neither cultural nor logical. Take it or don't. Believe it or don’t. Go Bohemian or don't. No wait--do! Just remember: „Bez práce nejsou koláče.“ "Without work there are no kolachkes." And kolachkes are one of our best desserts! |
